Western Digital has been the “goto” brand for many consumers for storage. Their latest iteration of portal storage, the My Passport Ultra Metal Edition, boasts tremendous storage in a sleek and stylish design. How does the Western Digital My Passport Ultra Metal Edition perform? Find out in the full review after the break!
The Western Digital Ultra Metal Edition unit that we have the opportunity to review is 2 TB, more than enough space for most on the go storage needs. The Western Digital Ultra Metal Edition also utilizes a USB 3.0 connection and is bus powered so no need for an extra battery pack or power brick to lug around on your travels.
With any storage device one of the most important aspects to consider is the transfer speeds. The Western Digital Ultra Metal Edition possessed transfer speeds which were impressive for a bus powered storage device. After several Disk Speed Tests we averaged approximately 108 MB/s read and write speeds. More than enough to transfer large files quickly and stream videos.
With regards to build quality, Western Digital usually shines and in this case the Ultra Metal Edition is no different. The aluminum finish on the outside is pristine and shows no signs of manufacturing issues. We were a little disappointed that only the front and side panels of the Ultra Metal Edition were aluminum. With a name like Ultra Metal Edition, we were expecting it to be fully constructed out of aluminum. Based on the construction, we would expect the drive to be able to take a bit of a beating, but do not expect the aluminum finish to stay scuff free (we recommend using a storage case if possible).
Western Digital includes drivers and software for both Windows and Mac Operating Systems right on the drive. From the Drive Utilities software that Western Digital provides, you can run diagnostics, have timers for when the drive goes into standby, and reformatting capabilities.
Overall, the Western Digital Ultra Metal Edition 2 TB performed well, providing quick transfer speeds and a durable outer shell. While the device does look awesome, we were hoping that given the price the entire shell could have been constructed of aluminum. If you’re looking for a large portable storage drive for your Mac or Windows machine, you really can’t go wrong with the Western Digital Ultra Metal Edition.
