We’ve all heard of Element Case’s aluminum bumper style cases, but what about Pocomaru? They’re trying to make a name for themselves with their aluminum case, the Defender for the iPhone 5. Does it make the grade? Find out in the full review after the break!

The package from Pocomaru was surprisingly simple and lightweight. The reason why I bring up lightweight is usually the aluminum bumper cases are a bit heavier.

With a brushed aluminum finish, the Pocomaru Defender had a strikingly subtle design. Clean lines and smooth edges accompanied the brushed aluminum button covers and standby/wake key.

The buttons themselves were some of the best we’ve seen from aluminum bumper style case manufacturers. Great tactile feedback and smooth movement along the vibrate key reinforced the polished design. There was some excess movement on the volume key but it was a minor issue.

The engravings on either side of the Pocomaru Defender were small and added character to the case, not overpowering at all (unlike some other manufacturers that go branding crazy). The photo above also shows one of the most unique features to the case design, the slots used to remove the bottom portion of the case.

An included metal key is used to insert into the bottom most slots on the case to release the bottom of the case. I have to say that it is refreshing to see a case manufacturer NOT use metal screws to install their aluminum bumpers. It also served to provide an easy way to install and remove the bumper itself.

While the Pocomaru Defender case lacks a lay on the table design, there are small ridges on the four corners of the back which prevent the iPhone 5 back panel from touching a flat surface. This leads to the only other issue we had with the Defender case, without a lay on the table design, we would have liked a screen protector included with the case. One additional element to mention is we experienced zero signal loss with the case installed, another huge plus.

Overall the Pocomaru Defender Aluminum Bumper case was one of the most impressive cases we have had the pleasure of reviewing. With a myriad of aluminum bumper style cases on the market, especially from big hitters like Element Case, you have to stand out. With the unique installation feature (screw-less) and lightweight aluminum design, the Pocomaru Defender Aluminum Bumper case is a serious contender.
