Finally a company has decided to jump on the money wagon and develop a true dock for the Apple line of Macbook Pro’s/Macbook Air’s. The Horizontal Dock from Henge Docks is as awesome up close as is it on their website.
We were seriously excited for a true docking station for the long line of Apple laptops that did not become vaporware like so many other Kickstarter projects in the past. We have not been huge fans of docking solutions like the Sonnet Echo 15, as they still require connecting cables to the laptop (not a clean connect and disconnect process).
The chassis is constructed out of aircraft grade aluminum and the dock itself has two thunderbolt ports, six USB 3.0 ports, Kensington Lock, power, firewire 800, SD card reader, and audio connections. The Macbook Pro or Air will slide into the dock and the sensors will register whether or not the Macbook Pro or Air is aligned properly (as to not risk a port misalignment). Once docked, a motorized mechanism slides into the various ports.
We cannot wait to get our hands on one of these and look forward to when we can provide you an in depth review. Pricing (which is stated as being $249) will most likely be more around $300 – $350 according to the representative at the CES 2014 booth. This is likely due to the licensing costs around thunderbolt.
