The fatcat PowerBar is a 4200 mAh beast which outputs at a voltage of 5.0 – 5.5. Fatcat makes an immediate impression with its professional packaging (no fly by night package here). Right out of the box we’re greeted with something we’re not normally familiar with in portable travel chargers: multiple charging device tips.

The Fatcat PowerBar includes various tips from a 30 pin connector to a regular micro USB, refreshing as most just assume you’re charging an Apple device. The flexibility is a huge plus for the PowerBar. Sadly no included lightning cable adapter but we blame that on licensing. Our PowerBar actually came pre-charged (according to the documentation most come with 65-70% charges). Even though we could start charging devices right out of the box we decided to fully charge the device first before testing it out. A full charge of the PowerBar takes between 4 – 7 hours depending on the input you’re using.

The PowerBar itself is pretty lightweight however we did notice that due to the high gloss finish, our fingerprints stuck to the surface fairly easily. We would have preferred a matte finish (hint!). As with most high gloss finish products, scuffing it was fairly simple as well.

We did get a full charge from our fully discharged iPhone 5 in our tests. We were less than satisfied with the pouch that was included with the PowerBar, we had hoped for a sturdier way of protecting the high gloss finish.

Overall, the Fatcat PowerBar lived up to our expectations as a travel charger providing adequate charging back-up. However with the high gloss finish that seemed to attract our fingerprints like a magnet and the protective pouch which really provided minimal protection, it fell a bit short as a complete package.

  1. Nice case, but I prefer the Pong Research iPhone case. Studies conducted by numerous scientific teams in several nations have raised troubling questions about possible associations between heavy cell phone use and serious health dangers. That’s why I decided to do something that reduce cell phone radiation levels for protect to my family. I read about Pong Research cases, Pong technology is custom-designed for each mobile device and works to redirect radiation away from your head and body. I hesitated about it, anyway, I bought a case Pong because is the only technology proven in FCC-certified laboratories to reduce the exposure to mobile device radiation by up to 95% below the FCC limit without compromising the device’s ability to communicate.
