Always great to see a company new to the scene rise up and impress. Evutec is just that company with their latest in DuPont Kevlar constructed cases for the iPhone 5 and 5S. We had the opportunity to check out two from their latest Karbon line: S and SP. How do these cases stack up? Find out in the full review after the break!
Evutec is the first to boast a DuPont Kevlar fiber construction that allows for high strength (stronger than steel considering equal weight basis) while also being lightweight. From the look of the package we were already impressed, one of the easiest opening packages we have ever encountered (and there are some really bad ones out there).
The cases we saw inside were a work of art. They were clean and smooth, without any leftover material from manufacturing (flash). The Karbon SP series model has a 2 piece construction that provides an internal shock absorbing component with a hard DuPont Kevlar outer shell. The Karbon S series model is a 0.7mm thin snap on case that does not provide the same shock protection but it does provide scratch/scuff coverage.
The Karbon S series installed easily providing a good amount of coverage and cutouts that aligned well with all the components of our iPhone 5S. Removing the Karbon S series snap case was a little difficult but was removed safely without any issues. We installed it several times just to see if the VERY thin 0.7mm thin case would be able to retain its form (which it passed with flying colors). As an important element to point out, the Karbon S series case does possess a lay on the table design allowing for additional protection in situations where you lay the phone face down.
For those that want additional protection beyond scratches and scuffs, the Karbon SP series provides a shock absorbing inner shell easily fitting around the iPhone 5S and not sagging at all after install. There was very little overlap onto the screen while still providing a great lay on the table design. The outer shell installed easily unlike others we have tested in the past. It lasted several installs without any deformation to the inner shock shell or outer hard shell. The only true downside to the Karbon SP series case was the cutout for the lightning cable: it would not allow us to use the aftermarket wide lightning converter. All the cutouts were again well placed and aligned properly, while also having no left over flash material. The cutout for the 3.5mm jack worked for our smaller headphone cables, but those with larger connectors will be disappointed with the opening size.
Overall, Evutec impressed us with their build quality and attention to detail with the Karbon S and SP series cases. Both designs boasted a great “fiber” design and the red finish on the Karbon S Series really popped. The S series is great for those not wanting a lot of bulk, but still want to maintain a certain level of scratch and scuff protection. The SP series is ideal for those looking for shock protection while still also maintaining a rather small footprint (one of the thinnest shock protection type cases we have ever tested). If you are in the market for some quality cases, you really cannot go wrong with the Evutec Karbon S and SP series cases for the iPhone 5/5S.
